Germany agrees to throw open Holocaust records. German Justice Minister Ms Brigitte Zypries announced the decision to open the treasure trove of secret documents pertaining to the Holocaust after six decades of dilly- dallying. She said this in Washington after her meeting with Ms Sara Bloomfield, the Director of the US Holocaust Museum. Ms Brigitte said that she was happy to be able to announce the change in Germany’s viewpoint with regard to handling the vast archive of 30 million records. Till now Germany hid behind fears of lawsuits over infringement of personal data laws. The archive is said to contain among other things details of death camp inmates, transportation trains, round-ups, medical research details for propagation of Hitler’s Aryan supremacy and cleansing of non-conformists and Gestapo prosecution before the onset of the Second World War. The archive known as the International Tracing Service (ITS) comprises meticulous Nazi documentation and will have immense historical significance and act as valuable fodder to researchers and scholars for several generations. It is expected that the documents would help complete a true picture of Nazi slaughter.
